How do you think Mulder and Scully conceived William? I mean, I know they said it was artificial insemination, but in the beginning of "All Things" we see Mulder lying naked in her bed. So what do you think? Artificial insemination or the natural way?

LOL - Not that I know anything about the medical world, but I think even Scully's brain as genius as they made it out, what with all that expert knowledge of multiple professions, would take on that blue screen of death if she tried to explain it.

We all [or at least the shipper in me] would like to believe in the natural way - but we all know that wouldn't be true to fashion in this world. For further x-files story-telling I do hope we are given some sort of answers, not so much as to how she came to be pregnant - the fact is Mulder and Scully had a child who wasn't altogether normal and that for me is what will be exciting in the future should they choose to revisit it.

And I've moved off topic...oops.

I always assumed that when they tried to "take all of her ova" they missed one :)

In "Per Manum" we see that the artificial insemination didn't take and in "Requiem" it was obvious she was surprised by the pregnancy since neither she nor Mulder put together her symptoms as being those of a newly pregnant woman.

So I always felt that it happened the good old fashioned way.
I agree with the Africa aspect. I think that if the ship had the ability to bring people back from the dead...restoring ova should be a cinch. According to GA on the commentary for all things, she was asked to write the teaser because the Producers wanted to hint at the fact that they were sleeping together. All natural all the way! As for William's "otherness", I often wonder if the vaccine that Scully receives in FTF , might have been a factor?

The Natural Way of course!

Miracle.

Higher Power.
This is the X Files you know M/S have to do things the hard way....with a little manipulation from CSM and Crew (exposure to black oil and vaccines) and....both M/S exposure to Alien technology...changed their DNA (and restoring/ healing to ovaries) to create "the old fashion way"....a little boy with special powers who should be a major player in XF3...

Maybe both ways were tried...lol.

I have been married about 15 years to my ex husband who worked and still works on fertility treatment, and I translated entire books for him, lol.

So I know that normally if a woman is on fertility treatment , there is first a hormonal stimulation for superovulation. In Scully´s case that was not possible , but they still had her cryo-preserved ovulums. Normally these ovulums get fertilized in vitro, and then several of them are put into the uterus (that is why couple who went on artificial insemination often get twins or more kids then).

As we know Scully´s doctors didn´t succeed on the first time, but normally you undergo this treatment several times. So in one of several treatments they succeeded.

And as we could see in "All things" there might also have been one or more special nights for Scully and Mulder.... ;-)
Your view of this is very interesting, Andrea. We all have DNA in us that is non-coding DNA or Junk-DNA, part of it might really have come from elsewhere beyond our planet, following the panspermium theory. Part of this "Junk DNA " can cause cancer, other part of it might give a person or any living being on our planet special abilities etc. when activated. Scientists still don´t know all about this.

That is what Iliked so much about the X Files, that they included in the series these new aspects and knowledge of science, of astrobiology, of genetics etc.

This discussion is great, and I love all the theories out there. Forehead sex! LOL. No, uhmmm:

I think it was the natural way. My belief is that their love, which was so powerful, had the power to create miracles, and the miracle was in Scully. That's what I believe. I also believe that the reason William wasn't taken away at the end of Existence was because they realized that, as Mulder said, he wasn't what they thought he was. I think the reason for the special gifts given to William was because of Mulder. I think that whatever disease or illness he had at the end of season six (Fowley episodes! EW!) had altered his DNA. It's my belief that all his cells were altered, including his sperm cells. Perhaps, that alteration.... or mutation, was passed down to William when Mulder's sperm fertilized Scully's egg. (I don't think they were too concerned about protection.) I think that his mutated gene was dominant, and therefore showed up in Wlliam, giving him supernatural abilities. I think what Spender gave William in "William" turned that mutated gene off, supressing his powers. William is special. He was different from ALL babies, and I don't think there was one ever created quite like him. It's not just the mutated gene that makes him special, it's how he was created -by such a powerful love -a love with the power to create miracles. With all that being said, if XF3 is ago I think William will play a vital role in the movie. I think he could just about help stop the colinization all together, but we'll see what CC and FS cook up for us. (:

"Never give up on a miracle."

^^Okay, so I think that was a *HINT* to my miracle theory.
True, Chris Carter and the other authors made Scully and Mulder and us fans wait very long for that......haha!

"Of course, she must have also had a super egg and a steel uterus to maintain said super egg and super sperm!" lol that cracked me up.

So what I think is that, Mulder and Scully conceived William the natural way. At the intro of All Things, Mulder was sleeping naked and Scully leaves and ya know. Its just the natural way. And oh, at the Pilot episode, I'm pretty sure Cupid had hit Mulder an arrow so bad that he fell inlove with Scully instantly! The first held of their hand was just love. Too bad, Mulder had to wait 7 years before having sex with Scully lolol
