The photos (which are GORGEOUS and worth the price of the book like Chris said) take up most of the book and I was expecting a lot more delving into the behind the scenes stuff, plot points, etc. Some episodes get but a mere sentence-long mention! The best parts of it are the interviews with Chris and Frank, etc. and I loved the intros. I wish it could have given us more, but it is a lovely book and I do enjoy browsing through it.

Permalink Reply by the OTHER Allyson. on December 30, 2008 at 1:44pm Publishing is a very rough business and unfortunately, editorial and proofing budgets are not what they should be, all across the board. As to the depth of information, the original word count was 20,000 words. That's basically a medium-length New Yorker article. I pushed and pushed to bump the word-count as much as I could (and Insight was very generous), but this was not meant to be an episode guide. It's meant to be a photo book, essentially, and by that measure it succeeds wonderfully. And as I said, I had two and a half weeks to edit hundreds of pages of transcripts and to cover 202 episodes and 9 nine years of television. I did the best I could to focus on the fan-favorite episodes. I'm sure 2Shy or Rain King are someone's favorite episode, but I had a sword over my head as it was.
A lot of writers like to wait a week or two before they proof a manuscript, but there was no time. I came in on the project at the very last minute and it had to go to layout. I never saw the spreads, so I never got a chance to proof or fact-check. I told Matt when we were done doing the book that it was a lot like doing an episode of The X-Files (I Want To Believe, as well). I am very happy with the end result, warts and all. I think it's a beautiful incredible book. My contribution was Joe Friday, just-the-facts, so I don't feel proprietary towards the book- I look at it as a fan. The errors? Well, they're a testament to the terrible, terrible trouble the publishing industry is in, which is a sign of these terrible times. All appropriately X-Files, in a meta kind of way.

Permalink Reply by Never Again on January 1, 2009 at 6:22pm Totally agree, Chris. to quote J.J. Abrams "these things needed to exist". This book needed to exist, not to sound mushy, but for me it's true. BTW, that piece of the preface from J.J. Abrams resonates so true for me. It's as if he took the words right out of my mouth.
Sure there are mistakes, some more noticeable than others (I too tend to cringe at certain details, but that's because of my OCD, lol), but I don't tend to focus on those things.....besides, I was way too busy drooling over the amazing photos hahaha. All in all it is an exquisite piece of XF history rolled into a book. I think we all would have loved a play by play encyclopedia on everything "X" haha...maybe some day? ;)
BTW, I too have noticed grammatical mistakes in various books/pieces of work. I often think now that we are getting sloppy in an overly exorted effort to just get a product out ($$$) instead of delicately taking our time, but alas, it is what it is and I am more that content with my everything "X" world.
