De lurking....

Every once in a while I get a message from one of my friends that goes something like this:

"Are you alive up there?" 

"Yes. Just busy. The end is in sight."

"Funny, I thought you said that a few months ago?"

Between work and school, things are crazy. But....something has come to my attention and I'd like to ask for your help. 

The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS), is in the running for one of those nice big grants that Pepsi is giving away, but they need votes for it to happen. Let me share with you a little bit about the society. They are non-profit, and completely funded by private donations. They rescue abused or abandoned animals, offering a safe place rehabilitation, and eventually adoptions for the animals they rescue. LAPS also works closely with a local women's prison, providing the women who are incarcerated with training to work with dogs that require special care. These are animals that are so hurt--emotionally or physically--that they require additional rehabilitation. They do this by living with the women at the prison, with one or two women primarily responsible for the animal's care. This is where we got our beloved dog, Luke. 

This is a picture of Luke when we first met him: 

Luke was a rescue we adopted from LAPS. He was found wandering in the woods, near starvation. He was wary, terrified of people, yet there was a part of him that yearned to be come closer. He had this odd habit of attempting to come near, but pulling back—as if he might be hit—at the same time. There was however, something in him that hit a cord with us, and we fell in love with him from the start.

Luke spent 3 months in the prison program. the longest of any dog they had at the time. He worked with a lovely woman, and we are indebted to her for the work she did with him.
